TMUA results arrive as numbers like 5.7 or 6.3 on a 1–9 scale — but what did you actually need to score them, and what do universities think they mean? This guide explains the scale, the statistics behind it, and how to set a target without fooling yourself.
The 1–9 scale
Each paper is reported on a scale from 1 (lowest) to 9 (highest), to one decimal place, alongside an overall score. The scale is designed so candidates spread out usefully: most cluster in the middle, few reach the extremes. Think of it like a finely graded ruler rather than a percentage — a 6.0 is not “60%”, it is a standard of performance. Equating: why raw marks shift
No two papers are exactly as hard, so raw marks are equated: statistical methods adjust for difficulty so a 6.0 means the same standard every year. A gentle paper might need 33/40 for a given band where a brutal one needs 29/40. Consequence: anyone selling you fixed “grade boundaries” is guessing. The 2024 rescale
In 2024 UAT-UK recalibrated the reporting scale. Scores are still reported 1–9, but the mapping underneath was refreshed — so treat fine-grained comparisons across the 2024 boundary cautiously (a 6.2 in 2023 and a 6.2 in 2025 are close cousins, not identical twins). Practically, nothing changes for you: revise the same syllabus, sit the same mocks, and aim for the same competitive region described below.
Modal 4.5 & competitive 6.0–6.5+
The modal (most common) overall score is around 4.5 — the peak of a roughly bell-shaped distribution of a strong, self-selecting cohort. Rough landmarks candidates use: 5.0+ strong and above average; 6.0+ competitive for selective courses; 6.5–7.0+ top-decile territory that strengthens any application; 7.5+ exceptional. These are descriptive, not thresholds — universities publish no pass mark, and a 5.8 with a stellar interview beats a 6.8 with a weak one. The honest IRT caveat
UAT-UK uses item-response-theory (IRT) style equating: your scaled score reflects not just how many you got right but the modelled difficulty of what you got right, smoothed across the cohort. That means no linear formula converts raw mock marks to official scaled scores. Our practice estimator deliberately uses a simple linear map and labels its output a band range, not false precision — “about 5.5–6.0”, never “5.73”. Any tool or tutor promising exact predictions is overstating. Use estimates to track trends across mocks (are you climbing from 4.5 toward 6.0?) rather than fixating on decimals.
Setting your target
Work backwards from your courses: for the most selective, aim your mocks at 6.0–6.5+ so exam-day nerves still land you competitive; otherwise target consistent 5.5+. What to do with your first mock score
Treat your first mock as a diagnostic, not a verdict. Convert each paper with the score calculator and record the indicative band, then set it beside the landmarks on the grade boundaries page: around 4.5 is the modal hump where most candidates cluster, 5.0–6.0 is strong, and 6.0–6.5+ is the competitive region for the most selective courses. If your band sits near 4.0–5.0, that is entirely normal for a first attempt under strict 75-minute, no-calculator conditions — the gap tells you how much timing and fluency work remains, not whether you belong. Log every miss by topic code in an error log before you revise anything else.
Next, turn the log into a fortnight of drills. Most first mocks leak Paper 1 marks through rusty algebra rather than exotic topics, so start with exemplars such as TMUA-P1-MM1-002 and TMUA-P1-MM1-003, redo each miss from scratch without notes, then run five-question bursts in /practice?topic=MM1 until easy algebra takes under two minutes. Re-sit half of a timed mock a fortnight later, convert again with the calculator, and judge progress by the trend across mocks — climbing from 4.5 toward 6.0 — rather than any single decimal.
