Algebra is the grammar of Paper 1: nearly every MM topic assumes you can rearrange, factorise and simplify without thinking. TMUA examiners probe fluency rather than novelty — completing the square under time pressure, handling surds and fractional indices exactly, solving inequalities where multiplying by a negative flips the sign, and reading function notation (including inverses and composites) at speed.
The classic MM1 traps are sign errors in quadratics, cancelling terms that are not common factors, and treating √(a+b) as √a+√b. Because calculators are banned, practice must be by hand: drill short sets until routine manipulation takes under two minutes, and always substitute your answer back into the original equation as a 15-second check.
